Remembering Paul Newman...UPDATED

This is how I will always remember Paul Newman:



I have seen Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid so many times, I can almost quote it, verbatim...seriously.

Here are a couple quotes that stand out in my mind:

"Who ARE those guys?"

"Think you used enough dynamite there, Butch?"

This is one I use at work, almost on a daily basis:

"Morons...I've got morons on my team."

He made his screen debut in 1954 in the biblical epic, "The Silver Chalice": (Well, it had biblical overtones...)



Though they first became acquainted while working on the Broadway play Picnic in 1953, Newman and Woodward wouldn't fall in love until reuniting on the set of The Long Hot Summer. Following a divorce from his first wife Jackie, Newman and Woodward tied the knot in Las Vegas on Feb. 2, 1958, starting what would be one of Hollywood's longest-lasting unions. When asked why he never strayed, the actor famously said, "Why fool around with hamburger when you have steak at home?" [People]



They remained married until his death...a rarity in Hollywood. In 1990, they both starred in "Mr. and Mrs. Bridge". (Joanne Woodward is a marvelous actress, IMHO)



Newman's only son, Scott died of an accidental drug-and-alcohol overdose in 1978. Of their relationship, Newman said, "I had lost the ability to help him ... we both backed away." In his memory, the actor started the Scott Newman Center, a Torrance, Calif., drug-abuse prevention facility. [People]

and later (1986) , the sequel to "The Hustler" saw Newman reprising his "Fast Eddie Felson" role and teaming with my favorite director Martin Scorsese. "The Color Of Money" finally gave Newman an Academy Award. Newman and Cruise...what a combination! How many remember that Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" was made famous in this movie? "..and his hair was PERFECT." (Last time to pause playlist, and sorry about the expletive at the beginning of the clip.)



1963 gave us "Hud":



Who can forget the coolest? "Cool Hand Luke": (How many hard boiled eggs could you eat?)



My favorite of his later movies was "The Verdict":

Paul Newman was a true Hollywood legend of the silver screen. His work will be missed.

Ladies, which one did you think was the better looking of the two...Paul Newman or Robert Redford? I always leaned toward RR, but MAN! What a choice, huh?

One last thing...can't forget the millions of dollars he donated to charities throughout the years:



It started in 1982 with an oil-and-vinegar salad dressing, the signature offering from his Newman's Own grocery line. Since then, the business has expanded into popcorn, sauce and more and has raised an estimated $250 million – with all proceeds going toward charitable organizations. Said Newman (here at the company's 20th anniversary bash), it's "mutually beneficial recycling from the haves to the have-nots." [People]

Thanks for the memories, Paul. I hope and pray you were prepared for the next act...

The Perils of Pedicures! (A DIFFERENT video from the one I sent out in my email...WARNING... Disturbing images!)

I first heard about this a couple years ago on Dateline. I had that video link which was VERY eye opening, but I have since lost it. There were about 8-9 women being interviewed who had all received these atrocious infections from simply getting a pedicure. One was only 18 years old and when she raised up her slacks, she had huge "holes" in her legs. She was crying as she said she would never be able to wear dresses or skirts again. Another woman related that as her father (a surgeon) walked her down the aisle on her wedding day, her legs were oozing from the infection she had picked up in a salon. The Dateline video had secretly taped salons which showed how they HAD NOT properly cleaned their equipment.

Believe me, I would LOVE to get a pedicure, but have since thought twice about it after hearing about this.

Just BE AWARE!!!

Unnecessary Roughness...(AKA) Is this guy for real?

I read this article by Gene Lyons in our local paper last week. This excerpt REALLY caught my attention:

...But hasn’t Alaska’s one-time “Miss Congeniality” a right to believe anything she likes ? Absolutely. But the rest of us are not compelled to take her views on Biblical “prophecy” more seriously than rival forms of soothsaying, such as Tarot card reading, crystal ball gazing, or examining the entrails of sheep. Persons who practice such rites, whether in the wholesome suburban confines of the Wasilla Bible Church or a cavern in the tribal areas of Pakistan are either frauds, fools or both. It’s time the rest of us quit being polite about it.

I don't believe I have EVER seen this country so polarized at election time. It seems like Christians with Christian values are being labeled as "right wing delusional, war-mongering, intolerant idiots". I guess it just depends on which main stream media channel you watch, as shown in this video:



***Note to self***Never trust Main Stream Media...

Hang on folks...it's gonna get a lot bumpier! And I am not talking about the election.

How we spent our "Free Friday" - the finale and pictures from Bloomington...

As promised here, these are the items we purchased from National Road Antique Mall a week ago yesterday. (I can't believe it has taken so long to finish this post...for all you "non-bloggers", this stuff is harder to do than it looks. At least it is for me. By the time I get the pictures from my camera to this blog, I have taken several steps, which I am sure I could avoid if I knew what I was doing. LOL)

First up, a really cool casserole dish with carrier that I got for $4.00:

The green dish and both pictures were half price so everything came to ten dollars and some change. So we didn't break the bank, which is always a GOOD thing!


Next up are some pictures of our trip to Bloomington to see Lauren for the first time since she moved down there. Of course we got lost (I was navigating...) and got stopped in a traffic tie up due to the state police letting the buses in from Western Kentucky University (I think) for IU's first football game of the season. Believe me, Jim was NOT a happy camper! But once we got there everything was good to go...

One last thing. Lauren must live in a pretty posh part of town since this was the gas station down the street. All the gas pumps had flower arrangements on top!

Palin comes out throwing punches

Not decided yet...McCain/Palin (at this point, I would rather have Palin/McCain, frankly) or Ron Paul...but gotta love it. For a totally "unknown" entity, she nailed that speech, IMHO!

ETA: As stated in an earlier post, the only time I have voted Republician is when a former pastor told the congregation, "You had better vote your conscience and not your pocketbook." This time, I feel that is the correct thing to do as well. Obama's platform is way too liberal for me to embrace. Knowing that Supreme Court judges' appointments could be made by him and his party is a MAJOR concern. That is just one of the many reasons I am not hopping on the Obama bandwagon. Here is a cartoon I found over on Mike Messerli's blog which I really enjoyed: I think it pretty much sums up how the MSM (main stream media) views Obama and would hope we view him as well.




Believe me, this decision doesn't come easily...this is the calendar I used all last year at work:

so for me to admit to possibly voting Republican again is not an easy statement for me to make! But knowing that God is ultimately in control is the reason I am not totally freaked out about this election.

As Mr. Messerli so eloquently put it:

There is an interesting balance between personal responsibility and divine sovereignty. As Christians we know that God rules on planet earth. He elevates one and brings down another. The governments that exist are there because God has placed them there. But in the midst of this is our part in his work. We are divinely in a country where we are allowed to be part of the government by our vote. Our responsibility? We must pray, and then vote. Vote for the person you believe is the right person to lead our country, but do it knowing that in the background God is orchestrating the election to accomplish his will. It's a strange thing to be involved by our vote and yet know that God will put the man in office he wants.

As far as Ron Paul...a vote for him is a vote to express the belief that the 2 party system in this country NEEDS TO GO!!! Remember, "absolute power corrupts absolutely". There is just too much money, greed and corruption involved in the 2 party system operating in this country, in my opinion. Did you realize that St. Paul received 50 million dollars in federal money just for security for the RNC? Don't know how much Denver was awarded. Just throwing it out there...



Please pray for our country at this CRUCIAL time in history. You don't have to look very far to see we need God's blessings now more than ever!
