2000 years ago today...give or take a few years...

In keeping with the theme of the title of my last post, I have chosen to talk about something MUCH MORE important. Today is Good Friday...a day that has significant meaning to a multitude of people.

I asked for the day off because I really don't like to work on Good Friday. I remember (back in the day) when everybody got this day off from work. Schools were closed. No mail was delivered. My, how times have changed.

Thank you, Jesus, for what you suffered for our sake, so many years ago. Because you died and rose again, we will forever live.

Because He Lives

God sent His son, they called Him Jesus
He came to love, heal, and forgive.
He lived and died to buy my pardon,
An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.
Because He lives, All fear is gone.
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living just because He lives.

How sweet to hold a newborn baby,
And feel the pride and joy he gives.
But greater still the calm assurance,
This child can face uncertain days because He lives.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.
Because He lives, All fear is gone.
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living just because He lives.

And then one day I'll cross the river,
I'll fight life's final war with pain.
And then as death gives way to victory,
I'll see the lights of glory and I'll know He lives.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.
Because He lives, All fear is gone!
Because I know He holds the future
And life is worth the living just because He lives!

But before we get to the Glory of the Resurrection, we have to go through Calvary...

PAUSE PLAYLIST FIRST

Nobody knows if Jesus was crucified on a Friday or not, but this is the day that Christians around the world choose to remember what He did for all of us. Good Friday shouldn't be just a day off from work...

As they led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ Then ” ‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ‘For if men do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.”

The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”

There was a written notice above him, which read: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and us!”

But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”

Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”

It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.

The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away. But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
Luke 23:26-49 (New International Version)

Thank you for this post Sue. I agree, times have changed. I too remember when this day was a somber occasion. No one worked,or offices closed at noon.Stores were closed and restaurants too. I am sad to see these times when the world took a break for reflection gone. Good Friday has always been a quiet day for our family, although my kids now look at this as old fashioned. It is hard to fight the world. I think we would do well to have breaks from the constant commerce and activity to just reflect. It doesn't have to be this day or a Christian Holy day, just a break from it all for everyone. Have a beautiful Easter weekend. God bless you, Pam

What a beautiful post.
I agree, I think we would all benefit from having more time to reflect rather than rushing on in the same old way. Fortunately living in the forest as we do at present, we are not part of the hurly burly way of life. Which is why we choose to live here, for now.

Sue, I really enjoyed this post. I also remember when banks and stores were closed on Good Friday. Hmmm....the change happened and I didn't even notice it.

There are others out there like you, I called a friend today at her job and her boss answered the phone. I asked for my friend and he told me he gave her today off since it was Good Friday. I said, "Good for you!"

I'll see you in church sunday!

Hi Sue:

You did a fine job on this post. It wasn't long ago that Good Friday was a day off for everyone and companies even encouraged employees to attend Good Friday services. And no one said a disparaging word about it, whether they were Christian or not.

Times have changed, people have changed, but, our God and Savior, Jesus Christ never will change! He can be trusted to His promises to the end! "It is done"!

Thank you for visiting Thistlepatch! I enjoyed your good Friday post. Our church did a play last night and part two is Sunday. Amazing to see the folks who showed up to see such a message. My prayer is that it will have an eternal impact on their souls. May you enjoy a blessed Easter with your family.
